What is a House Concert?
A house concert is a fun and intimate musical performance done at someone’s home. They are relaxed, interactive concerts that connect songwriters and music lovers in a way that is difficult to replicate in a traditional venue. The key is a focus on listening during the performance with a relaxed conversational vibe during breaks and afterward, when folks have a chance to visit with the artists and each other.
Is my house big enough to host one?
Probably! I’ve done house concerts in various spaces, from small living rooms and porches, to larger backyards and outdoor spaces. I don’t need a lot of room to perform, so the overall amount of space depends on how many people you’d like to attend. The key is to have enough space for your guests to comfortably listen to music.
Who comes to a house concert?
A house concert can be held for just you and your friends or it can be open to other local music lovers as well. Some hosts just invite friends and neighbors while others open it up to anyone. It’s really up to you. You can invite however many people you’d like.
Does it cost anything?
It doesn’t have to cost you a thing. Most of the time it's BYOB and snacks to share. Sometimes a host will offer snacks and bottled water and sometimes it's a potluck. That is the beauty of the house concert! You can customize it to work for you. Hosts typically ask guests for a “suggested donation” of $10-$20 to support the artist, and either collect the donations up front or place a donation box at the event. It’s a suggested donation, so all are welcome, even those who may not be able to contribute the suggested amount.
Do I have to provide any equipment?
I have all the gear needed for the music. If the event is outside people can bring blankets or folding chairs. Same with indoors if more chairs may be needed. The only thing I’ll need from the host is an electrical outlet and adequate lighting (especially if outdoors).
How long does the music last ?
This is really up to you. A typical schedule might look something like this:
Doors at 6:30 - this is a time for guests to chat, grab some food or a drink and meet the performer
Music from 7:30-9:00 - I’ll play two 40-45 minute sets with a short break in the middle.
After the music ends, the party can last however long you’d like. I always enjoy talking with fellow music lovers and will have albums and other merch to sell if anyone is interested.
Ultimately, the schedule is up to you - it’s your house!
How is the money collected?
Some hosts collect donations online in advance to confirm attendance (PayPal or Venmo). Others wait to put out a suggested donation box at the event, and some just forgo donations altogether and pay a flat fee for the performance. If you prefer this last option, get in touch and we can work something out. The bottom line is that if you want to host a house concert, then I’d love to play. We can find a way to make it happen!
